Zimmerman Proves He Is Either A Pathological Liar or Clinically Schizophrenic: What He’s Claiming Trayvon Said
George Zimmerman waits for the resumption of his second degree murder trial in Seminole circuit court in Sanford, Florida, July 1, 2013.
Jurors today heard George Zimmerman’s account in his own words of his fatal confrontation with Trayvon Martin as prosecutors played a dramatic audio tape of Zimmerman being questioned by police shortly after the shooting.
Zimmerman is heard telling a police officer how he saw Martin walking through his Sanford, Fla. neighborhood on a dark, rainy Feb. 2012 night. As a neighborhood watchman he tried to follow him in his car because there had been a series of break-ins in the gated community.
Zimmerman said he lost sight of Martin, got out of his car to call police and was walking back to his vehicle when the 17-year-old attacked him.
“He jumped out of the bushes and he said ‘What the f..k is your problem, homie?’” Zimmerman said on the tape.
“And I got my cell phone out to call 911 this time, and I said ‘I don’t have a problem.’ And he goes, ‘No, now you have a problem,’ and he punched me in the nose.”
In court, jurors listened closely to the tape, while Zimmerman showed no emotion and Martin’s father closed his eyes from time to time.
Zimmerman told police he fell down to the ground after being punched repeatedly. “I tried to defend myself. He just started punching me in the face, and I started screaming for help. I couldn’t see. I couldn’t breathe.”
Remember, of course, that Zimmerman was nearly twice the weight of Martin. To imagine that he could not roll this youth off of him, had Martin been the one on top, seems highly unlikely. As well, it is unusual in the extreme to be able to scream repeatedly and with a sustained pitch, as was the case with the screams heard on the 911 call, if you are having your head bashed into the concrete. Zimmerman, of course, says that “the suspect” was “mounted on top of me” and began to bang his head onto the ground.
Not only did Zimmerman apparently not understand that had his head been bashed onto the concrete, he would have needed immediate medical attention, and possibly prolonged hospitalization, but he seemed so out of touch with reality that he was still referring to the deceased Trayvon Martin as “the suspect,” as though the police were going to deputize him.
Zimmerman’s narrative continued, imagining that Martin “puts his hand on my nose and mouth, and he says ‘You are going to die tonight.’”
Yes, George Zimmerman wants the jury to believe that Martin, on a casual walk home with ice tea and Skittles was prepared to carry out an unprovoked act of murder, then proceed to his father’s girl friend’s house to watch the upcoming game. In essence, the defense is asking us to believe that Trayvon Martin was a cold, textbook sociopath, prepared to kill at the drop of a hat.
“As he banged my head again, I just pulled out my firearm and shot him,” Zimmerman said.
He said Martin fell backward. “And he’s like ‘Alright, you got me, you got me.”
Could anyone in their right mind expect such a narrative to be believed? Zimmerman seems to imagine the confrontation in terms of an epic battlefield dual to the death. Two foes – warriors – fighting to the bitter end. At last, the “bad guy” or “the suspect”, as Zimmerman described him, succumbs to defeat, acknowledging “alright, you got me, you got me,” realizing that he has been bested by his fellow warrior.
In short: George Zimmerman might simply do better to just cut to the chase and plead insanity.
Jurors were also shown a second interview, this one videotaped by police a day after the slaying. In this version, Zimmerman re-enacted the confrontation and added that he pulled out his gun “after he hit my head against the concrete several times.”
The prosecution maintains that Martin, not Zimmerman, was the person that neighbors heard shouting for help that night.
Zimmerman’s description of the events seem to tell us more about the defendant’s state of mind than it does of the actual confrontation that fateful night.
